Adventures in Crocheting – Part II

Yesterday, I posted that I was going to give crocheting a try. My great-grandma and my grandma both crocheted. I wish I would have asked them to teach me when I was younger and they were still alive. Ah! The foolishness of youth! So, the next best thing in this modern era is watching YouTube videos, right? But where to begin?

My first step was to search out some Facebook groups to join for beginner crocheters. I ended up joining two of them. I joined “Crochet School for Beginners” and “Crochet Beginners Group.” I have found that when you have an interest in something and don’t know where to begin, it’s helpful to join Facebook Groups in order to learn from others that have already been down the path you are about to embark on.

I tend to be a lurker when I first join a group as I want to get a feel for the people in the group. Both groups tend to be fairly active and what I have seen so far, the people in both groups are very encouraging to newbies. It can be a little intimidating as well because I’m seeing projects that other newbies have already completed and I’m a little bit blown away at the talent. That being said, I’m doing this for me and will keep in mind that everyone learns at their own pace.

One of the helpful tips that I have already received was to watch the beginners tutorial from “The Crochet Crowd” on YouTube. I was having a hard time figuring out how to hold the yarn in my left hand.  Michael “Mikey” Sellick  does a stellar job of walking you through the basics. I wish I would have watched his video before going out and buying crochet needles, but at least I know what to look for in the future.

I’m off to practice my chains! Wish me luck and remember, it’s never too late to try something new!
